Kenya: Young people recycle plastic as a shield against crime

The mountain of waste in Dandora towers up and can be seen from all the surrounding slums in eastern Nairobi.

The mountain is huge, covering an area equivalent to 20 football fields.

For years, over 2,000 tons of waste has been unloaded on the mountain every day and hundreds of families in Dandora make a living sorting and reselling the waste.

Kenneth Ochieng was born and raised on Dandora, and as a child he had to collect bottles to help the family.

He is now using this experience to engage other young people in recycling plastic bottles. At the same time, they earn a small income and get away from street crime.

Young people don’t have machines to process the plastic so it can be used in other products. On the other hand, they are very creative and create everything from jump ropes to armchairs.

Participants in Nafsi & Spor Media’s project Tangaza have made a video about the project.
